Sometimes I make it to Trader Joe’s to pick up the fun seasonal items, and sometimes I don’t, but I’ve seen people sharing their pom pom garlands and I love them!
I actually found a pack in shades of blue and decided to keep Y busy with it when he was home one day.
The cool thing about making felt pop pom garlands is that young kids can try them too. Just make sure to pick an age appropriate needle – use a large, blunt needle for younger kids – and have them string up some pom poms!
No, they won’t do a perfect job but they’ll build some fine motor skills as they create it.
A felt Hanukkah garland can be made so that the pom poms are all connected, or you can leave space in between them for a lighter airier garland. Of course, you can switch up this tutorial for any theme: just get the correct colored pom poms!
We plan to hang our felt Hanukkah garland this year, but last year we simply used it as table decor. It added a lot to our Chanukah party spread and was a big hit.
The pom poms used are wool felted pom poms (I’m pretty sure ours our fake wool) but you can also use typical pom poms, or even make your own in larger! The process is the same: thread them on a string using a needle and hang. Yes, it’s that easy! Real wool pom poms would give a much more upscale look.
Supplies needed
- Felt Pom Poms to match your Hanukkah decor (which is usually blue and white)
- String – I used blue embroidery floss
- A large blunt needle
How to make a felt Hanukkah garland
Tie a knot at the beginning of your string. You can tie it in a loop for easier hanging. Attach a needle to the other end. Make sure your string is a little longer than the garland will be.
Start stringing pom poms by threading them onto the string using the needle.
Make a pattern, or keep it freeform! If you ‘d like you can push them up against each other or leave spaces between your pom poms.
When you’re done, tie a knot at the other end to secure. You can once again make a loop for easier hanging.
