I hope you’ve been enjoying my coloring pages – like this dreidel coloring page that I shared last year. Recently, I decided to try my hand at a new type of drawing – creating mazes for my family and readers to enjoy. It’s a different type of challenge, but it exercises the same creative, problem-solving itch that makes my Mom-and-Crafter soul tick!
To kick-start this new category, I’m decided to share two original Chanukah mazes for free – in a dreidel and menorah shape just in time for Chanukah. These mazes are a perfect relaxing activity to sit with as you watch the Chanukah candles burn.
I also created a bundle of five mazes for those who want more. The only overlap is the Menorah one (that is in the freebie as well) – the dreidel in the bigger bundle is a different, more polished one – with a totally unique solution.
About the Hanukkah Mazes
These are all intermediate level mazes – 8-year-old Y took a couple of tries to solve the dreidel, but then felt so proud when he finally got it! This level is a sweet spot that can be hard to find, and I’m thrilled that I got it right for my kid to enjoy a real challenge without being too frustrated.
If you’re hosting a party this Chanukah, print a bunch of copies of these and perhaps other simple pencil-and-paper activities. It’s the perfect thing for the early arrivals to do as they wait for the program to get started. Especially when kids are involved, I find that it’s so helpful for them to have something simple but engaging to do during that downtime.
Not only are mazes fun to solve, the effort can really build your brainpower. For starters, it takes serious visual-spatial skill and fine motor coordination to trace through the winding paths. But more importantly, it’s an opportunity to integrate what’s known as right and left brain thinking.
The right brain is associated with visual and creative activity, while the left brain is associated with logical analysis. As you or your child navigate a maze, you’re combining the two types of processing to activate your problem-solving superpowers!
What’s more, working on a maze stretches your focus and attention span. For those kids (or adults?) who have a hard time sitting still and paying attention to details, they won’t feel the struggle at all while they’re concentrating on a good maze.
So go ahead and download your free printable Chanukah mazes below. If you love them, go on and get the full bundle. I’ve also included the solutions in case you get really stuck, so be careful not to look at the solution pages until after you’ve given the mazes a good try yourself!
